Once an Addict

Once an Addict is the 9th song on the album.

Cole is telling the story of his mother and her addiction to drinking because of a heartbreak. Cole's stepdad, Edward, cheated on his mother and got the woman pregnant, sending Cole's mother into a depression. Cole tells the story bout how it was killing him to see his mom like this, drinking, passing out, and because he was a child, he did not know how to deal with it and that scared him. His mother, the superhero in his eyes, has dropped to "ground zero." He can't deal so he runs away. He goes to college and mentions a "high" when his mom calls him. Cole has developed the same type of coping skill that his mother has, drugs.

The lesson behind this song is that pain will always come because life was not meant to be easy. So instead of trying to avoid the pain, we would be better off preparing to deal with the pain in more of a healthy way. Some people turn to drugs, others power, then there's money and sex. But there are also people that turn their pain into positive habits like working out, focusing on a new hobby, making better grades in school. We have the ability to determine how to cope with our pain. Temporary relief is quick, but does not last long. Coping skills helps you manage your stress better, which is more healthy for your mental. The link below will take you to a website that have a myriad of coping skills that you can choose from.
