Motiv8

Motiv8 is the 6th on the album.

He opens up the song with a snippet of superman performing some type of superpower, or even a transformation. But whatever it is, it has caused the people that were watching him perform the act to idolize him. He is seen as a person of greater power, influence, and even wealth, so it's easy for him to be the model person to be, or the savior. But there is another part of Superman. He is also a man, Clark Kent. Clark Kent has his own struggles as a man outside of a superhero costume. Clark Kent is his true character;  Superman is his reputation, what people see him as.

J. Cole is establishing the theme of the song from the snippet.

He, along with other rappers are looked to be idols, as he has stated in some of us interviews. Sorta kinda like superheroes, if you will. Why? Because again, they seem to be of great importance, and to have great power and influence. But on the other side is the real person behind the rapper. And the rapper could be motivated to get money, flying out when he wants, but "poppin pills" to feel alive because he's dying inside.  J. Cole is the superhero, but Jermaine is the man. And Jermaine may deal with different struggles that J. Cole does not, or covers it up.

So the question is, what is your Clark Kent state?

Who is the real you behind closed doors? The good and the bad. Your reputation is who you are to other people. Your character is who you are and what you do when no one is watching, and the thoughts that don't leave your mouth. Some of us are broken spiritually, can't find hope; emotionally, tired of being drained; financially, money is not flowing like it should; and physically, impaired function, slowing daily activities. This is the natural us, but we are seen as superheroes. Your are not alone. The weight is heavy, I know, but there is a reason why the burden was placed on you. Maybe because God knew that you would be able to handle it. But listen, don't let the pressure of your reputation cause your character to crack. Don't let the thought of you having to be so much of a superhero that you forget about yourself! Take time to make sure you are functioning properly before you go try to save the world. No, they won't ask you how you're doing. Yes, you will be expected to not have problems. This is why you must have a solid group of friends that can encourage you, and ABOVE ALL, ENCOURAGE YOURSELF. Get your Clark Kent and Superman on the same page towards your growth and elevation. We should all want to have a healthy character to match our strong reputation.
